Shahnaz Rahman, late Latifur Rahman top taxpayers
Once again, founder and former chairman of Transcom Group late Latifur Rahman has been named as one of the top taxpayers for exemplary compliance in tax payment.
Transcom Chairman Shahnaz Rahman also makes the list of the 76 highest tax paying individuals who deposited the highest amounts in taxes to the state coffers for the fiscal year 2019-20.
Latifur topped the list of the biggest taxpayers in the senior citizen category in the fiscal year 2015-16. Shahnaz was recognised as the highest taxpayer among women in Dhaka city earlier.
Apart from making the list of top taxpayers, Transcom Group Founder Latifur Rahman's family also got the title of "Kar Bahadur" or tax icons family along with 83 other families from across the country in 2017.
And for the fifth straight year, The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman has been named as the highest taxpayers in journalist category, thanks to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) which is going to recognise the biggest taxpayers with tax cards for their compliance.
The NBR also named Mediaworld, Mediastar and Transcraft -- the three owning companies of The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, their printer Transcraft -- as the top tax paying firms in the print and electronic media category.
These three companies -- sister concerns of one of the largest Bangladeshi conglomerates Transcom Group -- are getting the recognition from the tax authority since fiscal year 2015-16, when the NBR expanded the list of the awardees to include various professions and areas.
The NBR began to honour the highest taxpayers since the fiscal 2010-11 initially in two categories -- individuals and companies -- with the objective of motivating people to deposit due taxes.
The idea was to encourage compliance and bring more people in the tax net in a country where just over one percent of the population file returns regularly and tax avoidance is believed to be high.
Among journalists, Editor of Chattogram based daily Dainik Azadi MA Malek, Director and Head of News of Channel i Shykh Seraj and Editor-in-Chief of TV Today Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul have been named the highest taxpayers.
East West Media Group is another highest taxpayer in this category, according to the NBR notification.
