Prisoner jumps 60 feet below to escape; arrested three days later

A prisoner had jumped 60 feet below the four-storeyed under construction building of Chattogram Central Jail on Saturday morning.

Following the jump, he sustained injuries to his left feet and head, but still managed to board a train, before finally being apprehended three days later from Narsingdi district today.

After the arrest, the murder case accused, Farhad Hossain Rubel, narrated his escape plan to the cops which surprised the police and prison officials.

Addressing a press conference at Kotwali police station premises, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (South Zone) Palash Kanti Nath said, "Inmate Farhad Hossain Rubel jumped off the building, known as '32 Cell building', and landed on the other side of the boundary wall.

"The distance between the rooftop and the landing point was around 60 feet and following the jump he got injured," added ADC.

The ADC said, "At first, it was unbelievable to all of us but after scrutinising the CCTV footage we became sure. In the CCTV footage, we saw that he jumped off the building at around 5:30am in the morning."

With the injuries, he later boarded a Dhaka-bound train from Chattogram Railway Station and left the port city to avoid arrest.

"We are trying to learn the details of the escape plan from him… We will grill him after taking him into remand," ADC Polash said.

Earlier, a team of Kotwali police arrested Rubel from his aunt's house at Vella Kandir Char under Raipura police station of Narsingdi district.

On February 9 this year, Rubel was arrested in connection with the murder case of businessman Abul Kalam Azad who was stabbed to death by criminals at SRB Rail gate area under Sadarghat police station in the city on February 5.

Prison authorities have suspended two prison guards in Chattogram Central Jail, and withdrew its jailer and a deputy jailer, for their negligence in discharging duty over the matter.

A case was lodged over the incident.
