Palm Fibre al-Masad ( المسد )

»The surah that mentions the Palm Fibre rope that in Hellfire shall be twisted around the neck of the wife of the Prophet’s uncle, who bitterly opposed Islam; for she took great pride in wearing an ostentatious necklace she became known for and would slip by night to strew thorns and prickly plants in the Prophet’s path to injure his feet. It takes its name from

in which the phrase “ḥablun min masad” (meaning “a rope of palm fibre”) occurs.«
The surah is also known as: Abu Lahab, Fibre, Perish, The Flame, The Palm-Fibre Rope.

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ

Transliteration: bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmⁱ

Translation: In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

تَبَّت يَدا أَبي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

Transliteration

tabbat yadā ʾabī lahabin wa-tabb^a

Translation

Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!

ما أَغنىٰ عَنهُ مالُهُ وَما كَسَبَ

Transliteration

mā ʾaghnā ʿanhu māluhū wa-mā kasab^a

Translation

Neither his wealth availed him, nor what he had earned.

سَيَصلىٰ نارًا ذاتَ لَهَبٍ

Transliteration

sa-yaṣlā nāran dhāta lahabⁱⁿ

Translation

Soon he will enter the blazing fire,

وَامرَأَتُهُ حَمّالَةَ الحَطَبِ

Transliteration

wa-mraʾatuhū ḥammālata l-ḥaṭabⁱ

Translation

and his wife [too], the firewood carrier,¹

• Or ‘the informer.’

في جيدِها حَبلٌ مِن مَسَدٍ

Transliteration

fī jīdihā ḥablun min masadⁱⁿ

Translation

with a rope of palm fibre around her neck.
