»The surah that opens with the mention of galloping war steeds that it calls The Chargers,
whose very hoofs strike sparks upon the rocky earth as they carry their
riders furiously into the midst of the fray life. It takes its name
from “the chargers” (al-ʿadiyāt) mentioned in
. The surah touch upon Gods swearing by the warhorses He has subjected to man’s use that man is ungrateful and misguided.«

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
1
وَالعادِياتِ ضَبحًا
Transliteration
wa-l-ʿādiyāti ḍabḥan
Translation
By the snorting chargers,
2
فَالمورِياتِ قَدحًا
Transliteration
fa-l-mūriyāti qadḥan
Translation
by the strikers of sparks [with their hoofs],
3
فَالمُغيراتِ صُبحًا
Transliteration
fa-l-mughīrāti ṣubḥan
Translation
by the raiders at dawn,
4
فَأَثَرنَ بِهِ نَقعًا
Transliteration
fa-ʾatharna bihī naqʿan
Translation
raising therein a trail of dust,
5
فَوَسَطنَ بِهِ جَمعًا
Transliteration
fa-wasaṭna bihī jamʿan
Translation
and cleaving therein a host!
6
إِنَّ الإِنسانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنودٌ
Transliteration
ʾinna l-ʾinsāna li-rabbihī la-kanūdun
Translation
Indeed man is ungrateful to his Lord,
7
وَإِنَّهُ عَلىٰ ذٰلِكَ لَشَهيدٌ
Transliteration
wa-ʾinnahū ʿalā dhālika la-shahīdun
Translation
and indeed he is [himself] witness to that!
8
وَإِنَّهُ لِحُبِّ الخَيرِ لَشَديدٌ
Transliteration
wa-ʾinnahū li-ḥubbi l-khayri la-shadīdun
Translation
He is indeed avid in the love of wealth.
9
۞ أَفَلا يَعلَمُ إِذا بُعثِرَ ما فِي القُبورِ
Transliteration
ʾa-fa-lā yaʿlamu ʾidhā buʿthira mā fī l-qubūri
Translation
Does he not know, when what is in the graves is turned over,
10
وَحُصِّلَ ما فِي الصُّدورِ
Transliteration
wa-ḥuṣṣila mā fī ṣ-ṣudūri
Translation
and what is in the breasts is divulged,
11
إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِم يَومَئِذٍ لَخَبيرٌ
Transliteration
ʾinna rabbahum bihim yawmaʾidhin la-khabīrun
Translation
indeed their Lord will be best aware of them on that day?
