»The surah that opens with admonishing the Prophet against The Forbidding
or prohibition of something he once imposed on himself for the purpose
of not offending his wives, though God had made it lawful for him. Named
after the phrase “why do you forbid” (li mā tuḥrimu) in

It mentions two of the Prophet’s wives, namely Ḥafṣah and ʿĀyishah, for an incident when a confidence was betrayed ( ff.) and urges all believers to submit themselves to God and to guard themselves and their families against Hellfire (). The surah closes by giving examples of believing and disbelieving women (
ff.).«

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ

يا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ ما أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكَ ۖ تَبتَغي مَرضاتَ أَزواجِكَ ۚ وَاللَّهُ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ
Transliteration
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nabiyyu li-ma tuḥarrimu mā ʾaḥalla llāhu laka tabtaghī marḍāta ʾazwājika wa-llāhu ghafūrun raḥīmun
Translation
O Prophet! Why do you prohibit [yourself] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? And Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

قَد فَرَضَ اللَّهُ لَكُم تَحِلَّةَ أَيمانِكُم ۚ وَاللَّهُ مَولاكُم ۖ وَهُوَ العَليمُ الحَكيمُ
Transliteration
qad faraḍa llāhu lakum taḥillata ʾaymānikum wa-llāhu mawlākum wa-huwa l-ʿalīmu l-ḥakīmu
Translation
Allah has certainly made lawful for you the dissolution of your oaths,1 and Allah is your master and He is the All-knowing, the All-wise.

وَإِذ
أَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ إِلىٰ بَعضِ أَزواجِهِ حَديثًا فَلَمّا نَبَّأَت بِهِ
وَأَظهَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيهِ عَرَّفَ بَعضَهُ وَأَعرَضَ عَن بَعضٍ ۖ
فَلَمّا نَبَّأَها بِهِ قالَت مَن أَنبَأَكَ هٰذا ۖ قالَ نَبَّأَنِيَ
العَليمُ الخَبيرُ
Transliteration
wa-ʾidh
ʾasarra n-nabiyyu ʾilā baʿḍi ʾazwājihī ḥadīthan fa-lammā nabbaʾat bihī
wa-ʾaẓharahu llāhu ʿalayhi ʿarrafa baʿḍahū wa-ʾaʿraḍa ʿan baʿḍin
fa-lammā nabbaʾahā bihī qālat man ʾanbaʾaka hādhā qāla nabbaʾaniya
l-ʿalīmu l-khabīru
Translation
When the Prophet confided to one of his wives a matter, but when she divulged it, and Allah apprised him about it, he announced [to her] part of it and disregarded part of it. So when he told her about it, she said, ‘Who informed you about it?’ He said, ‘The All-knowing and the All-aware informed me.’

إِن
تَتوبا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقَد صَغَت قُلوبُكُما ۖ وَإِن تَظاهَرا عَلَيهِ
فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ مَولاهُ وَجِبريلُ وَصالِحُ المُؤمِنينَ ۖ
وَالمَلائِكَةُ بَعدَ ذٰلِكَ ظَهيرٌ
Transliteration
ʾin
tatūbā ʾilā llāhi fa-qad ṣaghat qulūbukumā wa-ʾin taẓāharā ʿalayhi
fa-ʾinna llāha huwa mawlāhu wa-jibrīlu wa-ṣāliḥu l-muʾminīna
wa-l-malāʾikatu baʿda dhālika ẓahīrun
Translation
If the two of you1 repent to Allah …2 for your hearts have certainly swerved, and if you back each other against him, then [know that] Allah is indeed his guardian, and Gabriel, the righteous among the faithful, and, thereafter, the angels are his supporters.
- That is, Ḥafṣah and ʿĀyishah, two of the Prophet’s wives.
- Ellipsis. The omitted phrase is, ‘it will be better for you.’

عَسىٰ
رَبُّهُ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبدِلَهُ أَزواجًا خَيرًا مِنكُنَّ
مُسلِماتٍ مُؤمِناتٍ قانِتاتٍ تائِباتٍ عابِداتٍ سائِحاتٍ ثَيِّباتٍ
وَأَبكارًا
Transliteration
ʿasā
rabbuhū ʾin ṭallaqakunna ʾan yubdilahū ʾazwājan khayran minkunna
muslimātin muʾminātin qānitātin tāʾibātin ʿābidātin sāʾiḥātin
thayyibātin wa-ʾabkāran
Translation
It may be that if he divorces you his Lord will give him, in [your] stead, wives better than you: [such as are] muslim, faithful, obedient, penitent, devout and given to fasting, virgins and non-virgins.

يا
أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا قوا أَنفُسَكُم وَأَهليكُم نارًا وَقودُهَا
النّاسُ وَالحِجارَةُ عَلَيها مَلائِكَةٌ غِلاظٌ شِدادٌ لا يَعصونَ اللَّهَ
ما أَمَرَهُم وَيَفعَلونَ ما يُؤمَرونَ
Transliteration
yā-ʾayyuhā
lladhīna ʾāmanū qū ʾanfusakum wa-ʾahlīkum nāran waqūduhā n-nāsu
wa-l-ḥijāratu ʿalayhā malāʾikatun ghilāẓun shidādun lā yaʿṣūna llāha mā
ʾamarahum wa-yafʿalūna mā yuʾmarūna
Translation
O you who have faith! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [assigned] angels, severe and mighty, who do not disobey whatever Allah has commanded them, and carry out what they are commanded.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ كَفَروا لا تَعتَذِرُوا اليَومَ ۖ إِنَّما تُجزَونَ ما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ
Transliteration
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna kafarū lā taʿtadhirū l-yawma ʾinnamā tujzawna mā kuntum taʿmalūna
Translation
[They will call out to the faithless:] ‘O faithless ones! Do not make any excuses today. You are only being requited for what you used to do.’

يا
أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا توبوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوبَةً نَصوحًا عَسىٰ
رَبُّكُم أَن يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُم سَيِّئَاتِكُم وَيُدخِلَكُم جَنّاتٍ تَجري
مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهارُ يَومَ لا يُخزِي اللَّهُ النَّبِيَّ وَالَّذينَ
آمَنوا مَعَهُ ۖ نورُهُم يَسعىٰ بَينَ أَيديهِم وَبِأَيمانِهِم يَقولونَ
رَبَّنا أَتمِم لَنا نورَنا وَاغفِر لَنا ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ
قَديرٌ
Transliteration
yā-ʾayyuhā
lladhīna ʾāmanū tūbū ʾilā llāhi tawbatan naṣūḥan ʿasā rabbukum ʾan
yukaffira ʿankum sayyiʾātikum wa-yudkhilakum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā
l-ʾanhāru yawma lā yukhzī llāhu n-nabiyya wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū maʿahū
nūruhum yasʿā bayna ʾaydīhim wa-bi-ʾaymānihim yaqūlūna rabbanā ʾatmim
lanā nūranā wa-ghfir lanā ʾinnaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun
Translation
O you who have faith! Repent to Allah with sincere repentance! Maybe your Lord will absolve you of your misdeeds and admit you into gardens with streams running in them, on the day when Allah will not let the Prophet down and the faithful who are with him. Their light will move swiftly before them and on their right. They will say, ‘Our Lord! Perfect our light for us, and forgive us! Indeed You have power over all things.’

يا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جاهِدِ الكُفّارَ وَالمُنافِقينَ وَاغلُظ عَلَيهِم ۚ وَمَأواهُم جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئسَ المَصيرُ
Transliteration
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nabiyyu jāhidi l-kuffāra wa-l-munāfiqīna wa-ghluẓ ʿalayhim wa-maʾwāhum jahannamu wa-biʾsa l-maṣīru
Translation
O Prophet! Wage jihād against the faithless and the hypocrites, and be severe with them. Their refuge shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.

ضَرَبَ
اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِلَّذينَ كَفَرُوا امرَأَتَ نوحٍ وَامرَأَتَ لوطٍ ۖ
كانَتا تَحتَ عَبدَينِ مِن عِبادِنا صالِحَينِ فَخانَتاهُما فَلَم يُغنِيا
عَنهُما مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيئًا وَقيلَ ادخُلَا النّارَ مَعَ الدّاخِلينَ
Transliteration
ḍaraba
llāhu mathalan li-lladhīna kafarū mraʾata nūḥin wa-mraʾata lūṭin kānatā
taḥta ʿabdayni min ʿibādinā ṣāliḥayni fa-khānatāhumā fa-lam yughniyā
ʿanhumā mina llāhi shayʾan wa-qīla dkhulā n-nāra maʿa d-dākhilīna
Translation
Allah draws an example for the faithless: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of our righteous servants, yet they betrayed them. So they1 did not avail them2 in any way against Allah, and it was said [to them], ‘Enter the Fire, along with those who enter [it].’
- That is, Noah and Lot.
- That is, the wives.

وَضَرَبَ
اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِلَّذينَ آمَنُوا امرَأَتَ فِرعَونَ إِذ قالَت رَبِّ
ابنِ لي عِندَكَ بَيتًا فِي الجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّني مِن فِرعَونَ وَعَمَلِهِ
وَنَجِّني مِنَ القَومِ الظّالِمينَ
Transliteration
wa-ḍaraba
llāhu mathalan li-lladhīna ʾāmanū mraʾata firʿawna ʾidh qālat rabbi bni
lī ʿindaka baytan fī l-jannati wa-najjinī min firʿawna wa-ʿamalihī
wa-najjinī mina l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna
Translation
Allah draws an[other] example for those who have faith: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, ‘My Lord! Build me a home near You in paradise, and deliver me from Pharaoh and his conduct, and deliver me from the wrongdoing lot.’

وَمَريَمَ
ابنَتَ عِمرانَ الَّتي أَحصَنَت فَرجَها فَنَفَخنا فيهِ مِن روحِنا
وَصَدَّقَت بِكَلِماتِ رَبِّها وَكُتُبِهِ وَكانَت مِنَ القانِتينَ
Transliteration
wa-maryama
bnata ʿimrāna llatī ʾaḥṣanat farjahā fa-nafakhnā fīhi min rūḥinā
wa-ṣaddaqat bi-kalimāti rabbihā wa-kutubihī wa-kānat mina l-qānitīna
Translation
And Mary, daughter of Imran, who guarded the chastity of her womb, so We breathed into it of Our spirit. She confirmed the words of her Lord and His Books, and she was one of the obedient.
