»The surah that opens with the praise of God as The Originator of the heavens and the earth. It takes its name from the word “fāṭir” (orginator), which occurs in
. The surah affirms God’s power and Creation and contrasts this with the powerlessness and uselessness of the “partners” set up by the idolaters. The surah warns the idolaters of their punishment and comforts the Prophet through mention of previous messengers who were also rejected as liars. The great rewards that await believers are described.«
The surah is also known as Sole Originator, The Bringer into Being, The Creator
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
Transliteration: bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi
Translation: In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ فاطِرِ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ جاعِلِ المَلائِكَةِ رُسُلًا أُولي أَجنِحَةٍ مَثنىٰ وَثُلاثَ وَرُباعَ ۚ يَزيدُ فِي الخَلقِ ما يَشاءُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ

Transliteration

al-ḥamdu li-llāhi fāṭiri s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi jāʿili l-malāʾikati rusulan ʾulī ʾajniḥatin mathnā wa-thulātha wa-rubāʿa yazīdu fī l-khalqi mā yashāʾu ʾinna llāha ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

Translation

All praise belongs to Allah, originator of the heavens and the earth, maker of the angels [His] messengers, possessing wings, two, three or four [of them]. He adds to the creation whatever He wishes. Indeed Allah has power over all things.

ما يَفتَحِ اللَّهُ لِلنّاسِ مِن رَحمَةٍ فَلا مُمسِكَ لَها ۖ وَما يُمسِك فَلا مُرسِلَ لَهُ مِن بَعدِهِ ۚ وَهُوَ العَزيزُ الحَكيمُ

Transliteration

mā yaftaḥi llāhu li-n-nāsi min raḥmatin fa-lā mumsika lahā wa-mā yumsik fa-lā mursila lahū min baʿdihī wa-huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu

Translation

Whatever mercy Allah unfolds for the people, no one can withhold it; and whatever He withholds no one can release it after Him,1 and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
  • That is, after His withholding it. Or ‘no one can release it except Him.’

يا أَيُّهَا النّاسُ اذكُروا نِعمَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَيكُم ۚ هَل مِن خالِقٍ غَيرُ اللَّهِ يَرزُقُكُم مِنَ السَّماءِ وَالأَرضِ ۚ لا إِلٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنّىٰ تُؤفَكونَ

Transliteration

yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu dhkurū niʿmata llāhi ʿalaykum hal min khāliqin ghayru llāhi yarzuqukum mina s-samāʾi wa-l-ʾarḍi lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa fa-ʾannā tuʾfakūna

Translation

O mankind! Remember Allah’s blessing upon you! Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the sky and the earth? There is no god except Him. So where do you stray?

وَإِن يُكَذِّبوكَ فَقَد كُذِّبَت رُسُلٌ مِن قَبلِكَ ۚ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُرجَعُ الأُمورُ

Transliteration

wa-ʾin yukadhdhibūka fa-qad kudhdhibat rusulun min qablika wa-ʾilā llāhi turjaʿu l-ʾumūru

Translation

If they impugn you, certainly [other] apostles were impugned before you, and all matters are returned to Allah.

يا أَيُّهَا النّاسُ إِنَّ وَعدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۖ فَلا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الحَياةُ الدُّنيا ۖ وَلا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِاللَّهِ الغَرورُ

Transliteration

yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ʾinna waʿda llāhi ḥaqqun fa-lā taghurrannakumu l-ḥayātu d-dunyā wa-lā yaghurrannakum bi-llāhi l-gharūru

Translation

O mankind! Allah’s promise is indeed true. So do not let the life of the world deceive you, nor let the Deceiver deceive you concerning Allah.1

إِنَّ الشَّيطانَ لَكُم عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذوهُ عَدُوًّا ۚ إِنَّما يَدعو حِزبَهُ لِيَكونوا مِن أَصحابِ السَّعيرِ

Transliteration

ʾinna sh-shayṭāna lakum ʿaduwwun fa-ttakhidhūhu ʿaduwwan ʾinnamā yadʿū ḥizbahū li-yakūnū min ʾaṣḥābi s-saʿīri

Translation

Satan is indeed your enemy, so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his confederates so that they may be among the inmates of the Blaze.

الَّذينَ كَفَروا لَهُم عَذابٌ شَديدٌ ۖ وَالَّذينَ آمَنوا وَعَمِلُوا الصّالِحاتِ لَهُم مَغفِرَةٌ وَأَجرٌ كَبيرٌ

Transliteration

alladhīna kafarū lahum ʿadhābun shadīdun wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum maghfiratun wa-ʾajrun kabīrun

Translation

There is a severe punishment for the faithless, but for those who have faith and do righteous deeds there will be forgiveness and a great reward.

أَفَمَن زُيِّنَ لَهُ سوءُ عَمَلِهِ فَرَآهُ حَسَنًا ۖ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُضِلُّ مَن يَشاءُ وَيَهدي مَن يَشاءُ ۖ فَلا تَذهَب نَفسُكَ عَلَيهِم حَسَراتٍ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَليمٌ بِما يَصنَعونَ

Transliteration

ʾa-fa-man zuyyina lahū sūʾu ʿamalihī fa-raʾāhu ḥasanan fa-ʾinna llāha yuḍillu man yashāʾu wa-yahdī man yashāʾu fa-lā tadhhab nafsuka ʿalayhim ḥasarātin ʾinna llāha ʿalīmun bi-mā yaṣnaʿūna

Translation

Is someone the evil of whose conduct is presented as decorous to him, so he regards it as good… .1 Indeed Allah leads astray whomever He wishes, and guides whomever He wishes. So do not fret yourself to death regretting for them. Indeed Allah knows best what they do.

وَاللَّهُ الَّذي أَرسَلَ الرِّياحَ فَتُثيرُ سَحابًا فَسُقناهُ إِلىٰ بَلَدٍ مَيِّتٍ فَأَحيَينا بِهِ الأَرضَ بَعدَ مَوتِها ۚ كَذٰلِكَ النُّشورُ

Transliteration

wa-llāhu lladhī ʾarsala r-riyāḥa fa-tuthīru saḥāban fa-suqnāhu ʾilā baladin mayyitin fa-ʾaḥyaynā bihi l-ʾarḍa baʿda mawtihā ka-dhālika n-nushūru

Translation

It is Allah who sends the winds and they raise a cloud; then We drive it toward a dead land and with it revive the earth after its death. Likewise will be the resurrection [of the dead].

مَن كانَ يُريدُ العِزَّةَ فَلِلَّهِ العِزَّةُ جَميعًا ۚ إِلَيهِ يَصعَدُ الكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ وَالعَمَلُ الصّالِحُ يَرفَعُهُ ۚ وَالَّذينَ يَمكُرونَ السَّيِّئَاتِ لَهُم عَذابٌ شَديدٌ ۖ وَمَكرُ أُولٰئِكَ هُوَ يَبورُ

Transliteration

man kāna yurīdu l-ʿizzata fa-li-llāhi l-ʿizzatu jamīʿan ʾilayhi yaṣʿadu l-kalimu ṭ-ṭayyibu wa-l-ʿamalu ṣ-ṣāliḥu yarfaʿuhū wa-lladhīna yamkurūna s-sayyiʾāti lahum ʿadhābun shadīdun wa-makru ʾulāʾika huwa yabūru

Translation

Whoever seeks honour1 [should know that] honour entirely belongs to Allah. To Him ascends the good word, and He elevates righteous conduct;2 as for those who devise evil schemes, there is a severe punishment for them, and their plotting shall come to naught.
  • The word ʿizzah in Arabic has a composite meaning including the senses of honour, prestige, glory and might.
  • Or ‘righteous conduct elevates it.’

وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَكُم مِن تُرابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُطفَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَكُم أَزواجًا ۚ وَما تَحمِلُ مِن أُنثىٰ وَلا تَضَعُ إِلّا بِعِلمِهِ ۚ وَما يُعَمَّرُ مِن مُعَمَّرٍ وَلا يُنقَصُ مِن عُمُرِهِ إِلّا في كِتابٍ ۚ إِنَّ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ يَسيرٌ

Transliteration

wa-llāhu khalaqakum min turābin thumma min nuṭfatin thumma jaʿalakum ʾazwājan wa-mā taḥmilu min ʾunthā wa-lā taḍaʿu ʾillā bi-ʿilmihī wa-mā yuʿammaru min muʿammarin wa-lā yunqaṣu min ʿumurihī ʾillā fī kitābin ʾinna dhālika ʿalā llāhi yasīrun

Translation

Allah created you from dust, then from a drop of [seminal] fluid, then He made you mates.1 No female conceives or delivers except with His knowledge, and no elderly person advances in years, nor is anything diminished of his life, but it is [recorded] in a Book. That is indeed easy for Allah.
  • That is, male and female.

وَما يَستَوِي البَحرانِ هٰذا عَذبٌ فُراتٌ سائِغٌ شَرابُهُ وَهٰذا مِلحٌ أُجاجٌ ۖ وَمِن كُلٍّ تَأكُلونَ لَحمًا طَرِيًّا وَتَستَخرِجونَ حِليَةً تَلبَسونَها ۖ وَتَرَى الفُلكَ فيهِ مَواخِرَ لِتَبتَغوا مِن فَضلِهِ وَلَعَلَّكُم تَشكُرونَ

Transliteration

wa-mā yastawī l-baḥrāni hādhā ʿadhbun furātun sāʾighun sharābuhū wa-hādhā milḥun ʾujājun wa-min kullin taʾkulūna laḥman ṭariyyan wa-tastakhrijūna ḥilyatan talbasūnahā wa-tarā l-fulka fīhi mawākhira li-tabtaghū min faḍlihī wa-laʿallakum tashkurūna

Translation

Not alike are the two seas:1 this one sweet and agreeable, pleasant to drink, and that one briny and bitter, and from each you eat fresh meat and obtain ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through them, that you may seek of His grace, and so that you may give thanks.
  • That is, the body of sweet water and the body of fresh water. The word baḥr, like yamm is used for a large river as well as for the sea (cf.
, , , , where it is used for the Red Sea; and ,
  • , where it is used for the Nile).

يولِجُ اللَّيلَ فِي النَّهارِ وَيولِجُ النَّهارَ فِي اللَّيلِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمسَ وَالقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجري لِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۚ ذٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُم لَهُ المُلكُ ۚ وَالَّذينَ تَدعونَ مِن دونِهِ ما يَملِكونَ مِن قِطميرٍ

Transliteration

yūliju l-layla fī n-nahāri wa-yūliju n-nahāra fī l-layli wa-sakhkhara sh-shamsa wa-l-qamara kullun yajrī li-ʾajalin musamman dhālikumu llāhu rabbukum lahu l-mulku wa-lladhīna tadʿūna min dūnihī mā yamlikūna min qiṭmīrin

Translation

He makes the night pass into the day and makes the day pass into the night, and He has disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs all sovereignty. As for those whom you invoke besides Him, they do not control so much as the husk of a date stone.

إِن تَدعوهُم لا يَسمَعوا دُعاءَكُم وَلَو سَمِعوا مَا استَجابوا لَكُم ۖ وَيَومَ القِيامَةِ يَكفُرونَ بِشِركِكُم ۚ وَلا يُنَبِّئُكَ مِثلُ خَبيرٍ

Transliteration

ʾin tadʿūhum lā yasmaʿū duʿāʾakum wa-law samiʿū mā stajābū lakum wa-yawma l-qiyāmati yakfurūna bi-shirkikum wa-lā yunabbiʾuka mithlu khabīrin

Translation

If you invoke them they will not hear your invocation, and even if they heard they cannot respond to you, and on the Day of Resurrection they will forswear your polytheism, and none can inform you like the One who is all-aware.
15
۞ يا أَيُّهَا النّاسُ أَنتُمُ الفُقَراءُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ هُوَ الغَنِيُّ الحَميدُ

Transliteration

yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ʾantumu l-fuqarāʾu ʾilā llāhi wa-llāhu huwa l-ghaniyyu l-ḥamīdu

Translation

O mankind! You are the ones who stand in need of Allah, and Allah—He is the All-sufficient, the All-laudable.
16
إِن يَشَأ يُذهِبكُم وَيَأتِ بِخَلقٍ جَديدٍ

Transliteration

ʾin yashaʾ yudhhibkum wa-yaʾti bi-khalqin jadīdin

Translation

If He wishes, He will take you away, and bring about a new creation;
17
وَما ذٰلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ بِعَزيزٍ

Transliteration

wa-mā dhālika ʿalā llāhi bi-ʿazīzin

Translation

and that is not a hard thing for Allah.
18
وَلا تَزِرُ وازِرَةٌ وِزرَ أُخرىٰ ۚ وَإِن تَدعُ مُثقَلَةٌ إِلىٰ حِملِها لا يُحمَل مِنهُ شَيءٌ وَلَو كانَ ذا قُربىٰ ۗ إِنَّما تُنذِرُ الَّذينَ يَخشَونَ رَبَّهُم بِالغَيبِ وَأَقامُوا الصَّلاةَ ۚ وَمَن تَزَكّىٰ فَإِنَّما يَتَزَكّىٰ لِنَفسِهِ ۚ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ المَصيرُ

Transliteration

wa-lā taziru wāziratun wizra ʾukhrā wa-ʾin tadʿu muthqalatun ʾilā ḥimlihā lā yuḥmal minhu shayʾun wa-law kāna dhā qurbā ʾinnamā tundhiru lladhīna yakhshawna rabbahum bi-l-ghaybi wa-ʾaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-man tazakkā fa-ʾinnamā yatazakkā li-nafsihī wa-ʾilā llāhi l-maṣīru

Translation

No bearer shall bear another’s burden, and should one heavily burdened call [another] to carry it, nothing of it will be carried, even if he were a near relative. You can only warn those who fear their Lord in secret and maintain the prayer. Whoever purifies himself, purifies only for his own sake, and to Allah is the return.
19
وَما يَستَوِي الأَعمىٰ وَالبَصيرُ

Transliteration

wa-mā yastawī l-ʾaʿmā wa-l-baṣīru

Translation

The blind one and the seer are not equal,
20
وَلَا الظُّلُماتُ وَلَا النّورُ

Transliteration

wa-lā ẓ-ẓulumātu wa-lā n-nūru

Translation

nor darkness and light;
21
وَلَا الظِّلُّ وَلَا الحَرورُ

Transliteration

wa-lā ẓ-ẓillu wa-lā l-ḥarūru

Translation

nor shade and torrid heat;
22
وَما يَستَوِي الأَحياءُ وَلَا الأَمواتُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُسمِعُ مَن يَشاءُ ۖ وَما أَنتَ بِمُسمِعٍ مَن فِي القُبورِ

Transliteration

wa-mā yastawī l-ʾaḥyāʾu wa-lā l-ʾamwātu ʾinna llāha yusmiʿu man yashāʾu wa-mā ʾanta bi-musmiʿin man fī l-qubūri

Translation

nor are the living equal to the dead. Indeed Allah makes whomever He wishes to hear, and you cannot make those who are in the graves hear.
23
إِن أَنتَ إِلّا نَذيرٌ

Transliteration

ʾin ʾanta ʾillā nadhīrun

Translation

You are but a warner.
24
إِنّا أَرسَلناكَ بِالحَقِّ بَشيرًا وَنَذيرًا ۚ وَإِن مِن أُمَّةٍ إِلّا خَلا فيها نَذيرٌ

Transliteration

ʾinnā ʾarsalnāka bi-l-ḥaqqi bashīran wa-nadhīran wa-ʾin min ʾummatin ʾillā khalā fīhā nadhīrun

Translation

Indeed We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and as a warner; and there is not a nation but a warner has passed in it.
25
وَإِن يُكَذِّبوكَ فَقَد كَذَّبَ الَّذينَ مِن قَبلِهِم جاءَتهُم رُسُلُهُم بِالبَيِّناتِ وَبِالزُّبُرِ وَبِالكِتابِ المُنيرِ

Transliteration

wa-ʾin yukadhdhibūka fa-qad kadhdhaba lladhīna min qablihim jāʾathum rusuluhum bi-l-bayyināti wa-bi-z-zuburi wa-bi-l-kitābi l-munīri

Translation

If they impugn you, those before them have impugned [likewise]: their apostles brought them manifest proofs, [holy] writs, and illuminating scriptures.
26
ثُمَّ أَخَذتُ الَّذينَ كَفَروا ۖ فَكَيفَ كانَ نَكيرِ

Transliteration

thumma ʾakhadhtu lladhīna kafarū fa-kayfa kāna nakīri

Translation

Then I seized the faithless. So how was My rebuttal!
27
أَلَم تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً فَأَخرَجنا بِهِ ثَمَراتٍ مُختَلِفًا أَلوانُها ۚ وَمِنَ الجِبالِ جُدَدٌ بيضٌ وَحُمرٌ مُختَلِفٌ أَلوانُها وَغَرابيبُ سودٌ

Transliteration

ʾa-lam tara ʾanna llāha ʾanzala mina s-samāʾi māʾan fa-ʾakhrajnā bihī thamarātin mukhtalifan ʾalwānuhā wa-mina l-jibāli judadun bīḍun wa-ḥumrun mukhtalifun ʾalwānuhā wa-gharābību sūdun

Translation

Have you not regarded that Allah sends down water from the sky, with which We produce fruits of diverse hues; and in the mountains are stripes white and red, of diverse hues, and [others] pitch black?
28
وَمِنَ النّاسِ وَالدَّوابِّ وَالأَنعامِ مُختَلِفٌ أَلوانُهُ كَذٰلِكَ ۗ إِنَّما يَخشَى اللَّهَ مِن عِبادِهِ العُلَماءُ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزيزٌ غَفورٌ

Transliteration

wa-mina n-nāsi wa-d-dawābbi wa-l-ʾanʿāmi mukhtalifun ʾalwānuhū ka-dhālika ʾinnamā yakhshā llāha min ʿibādihi l-ʿulamāʾu ʾinna llāha ʿazīzun ghafūrun

Translation

And of humans and beasts and cattle there are likewise diverse hues. Only those of Allah’s servants having knowledge fear Him. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-forgiving.
29
إِنَّ الَّذينَ يَتلونَ كِتابَ اللَّهِ وَأَقامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَأَنفَقوا مِمّا رَزَقناهُم سِرًّا وَعَلانِيَةً يَرجونَ تِجارَةً لَن تَبورَ

Transliteration

ʾinna lladhīna yatlūna kitāba llāhi wa-ʾaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾanfaqū mimmā razaqnāhum sirran wa-ʿalāniyatan yarjūna tijāratan lan tabūra

Translation

Indeed those who recite the Book of Allah and maintain the prayer, and spend out of what We have provided them, secretly and openly, expect a commerce that will never go bankrupt,
30
لِيُوَفِّيَهُم أُجورَهُم وَيَزيدَهُم مِن فَضلِهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ غَفورٌ شَكورٌ

Transliteration

li-yuwaffiyahum ʾujūrahum wa-yazīdahum min faḍlihī ʾinnahū ghafūrun shakūrun

Translation

so that He may pay them their reward in full and enhance them out of His grace. Indeed He is all-forgiving, all-appreciative.
31
وَالَّذي أَوحَينا إِلَيكَ مِنَ الكِتابِ هُوَ الحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِما بَينَ يَدَيهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِعِبادِهِ لَخَبيرٌ بَصيرٌ

Transliteration

wa-lladhī ʾawḥaynā ʾilayka mina l-kitābi huwa l-ḥaqqu muṣaddiqan li-mā bayna yadayhi ʾinna llāha bi-ʿibādihī la-khabīrun baṣīrun

Translation

That which We have revealed to you of the Book is the truth, confirming what was [revealed] before it. Indeed Allah is all-aware, all-seeing about His servants.
32
ثُمَّ أَورَثنَا الكِتابَ الَّذينَ اصطَفَينا مِن عِبادِنا ۖ فَمِنهُم ظالِمٌ لِنَفسِهِ وَمِنهُم مُقتَصِدٌ وَمِنهُم سابِقٌ بِالخَيراتِ بِإِذنِ اللَّهِ ۚ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الفَضلُ الكَبيرُ

Transliteration

thumma ʾawrathnā l-kitāba lladhīna ṣṭafaynā min ʿibādinā fa-minhum ẓālimun li-nafsihī wa-minhum muqtaṣidun wa-minhum sābiqun bi-l-khayrāti bi-ʾidhni llāhi dhālika huwa l-faḍlu l-kabīru

Translation

Then We made heirs to the Book1 those whom We chose from Our servants. Yet some of them are those who wrong themselves, and some of them are average, and some of them are those who take the lead in all the good works by Allah’s will. That is the greatest grace [of Allah]!

جَنّاتُ عَدنٍ يَدخُلونَها يُحَلَّونَ فيها مِن أَساوِرَ مِن ذَهَبٍ وَلُؤلُؤًا ۖ وَلِباسُهُم فيها حَريرٌ

Transliteration

jannātu ʿadnin yadkhulūnahā yuḥallawna fīhā min ʾasāwira min dhahabin wa-luʾluʾan wa-libāsuhum fīhā ḥarīrun

Translation

Gardens of Eden, which they will enter, adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be of silk.
34
وَقالُوا الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذي أَذهَبَ عَنَّا الحَزَنَ ۖ إِنَّ رَبَّنا لَغَفورٌ شَكورٌ

Transliteration

wa-qālū l-ḥamdu li-llāhi lladhī ʾadhhaba ʿannā l-ḥazana ʾinna rabbanā la-ghafūrun shakūrun-i

Translation

They will say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has removed all grief from us. Indeed Our Lord is all-forgiving, all-appreciative,
35
الَّذي أَحَلَّنا دارَ المُقامَةِ مِن فَضلِهِ لا يَمَسُّنا فيها نَصَبٌ وَلا يَمَسُّنا فيها لُغوبٌ

Transliteration

alladhī ʾaḥallanā dāra l-muqāmati min faḍlihī lā yamassunā fīhā naṣabun wa-lā yamassunā fīhā lughūbun

Translation

who has settled us in the everlasting abode by His grace. In it we are untouched by toil, and untouched therein by fatigue.’

وَالَّذينَ كَفَروا لَهُم نارُ جَهَنَّمَ لا يُقضىٰ عَلَيهِم فَيَموتوا وَلا يُخَفَّفُ عَنهُم مِن عَذابِها ۚ كَذٰلِكَ نَجزي كُلَّ كَفورٍ

Transliteration

wa-lladhīna kafarū lahum nāru jahannama lā yuqḍā ʿalayhim fa-yamūtū wa-lā yukhaffafu ʿanhum min ʿadhābihā ka-dhālika najzī kulla kafūrin

Translation

As for the faithless there is for them the fire of hell: they will neither be done away with so that they may die, nor shall its punishment be lightened for them. Thus do We requite every ingrate.
37
وَهُم يَصطَرِخونَ فيها رَبَّنا أَخرِجنا نَعمَل صالِحًا غَيرَ الَّذي كُنّا نَعمَلُ ۚ أَوَلَم نُعَمِّركُم ما يَتَذَكَّرُ فيهِ مَن تَذَكَّرَ وَجاءَكُمُ النَّذيرُ ۖ فَذوقوا فَما لِلظّالِمينَ مِن نَصيرٍ

Transliteration

wa-hum yaṣṭarikhūna fīhā rabbanā ʾakhrijnā naʿmal ṣāliḥan ghayra lladhī kunnā naʿmalu ʾa-wa-lam nuʿammirkum mā yatadhakkaru fīhi man tadhakkara wa-jāʾakumu n-nadhīru fa-dhūqū fa-mā li-ẓ-ẓālimīna min naṣīrin

Translation

They shall cry therein for help: ‘Our Lord! Bring us out, so that we may act righteously —different from what we used to do!’ ‘Did We not give you a life long enough that one who is heedful might take admonition? And [moreover] the warner had [also] come to you. Now taste [the consequence of your deeds], for the wrongdoers have no helper.’
38
إِنَّ اللَّهَ عالِمُ غَيبِ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ ۚ إِنَّهُ عَليمٌ بِذاتِ الصُّدورِ

Transliteration

ʾinna llāha ʿālimu ghaybi s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi ʾinnahū ʿalīmun bi-dhāti ṣ-ṣudūri

Translation

Indeed Allah is the knower of the Unseen of the heavens and the earth. Indeed He knows well what is in the breasts.
39
هُوَ الَّذي جَعَلَكُم خَلائِفَ فِي الأَرضِ ۚ فَمَن كَفَرَ فَعَلَيهِ كُفرُهُ ۖ وَلا يَزيدُ الكافِرينَ كُفرُهُم عِندَ رَبِّهِم إِلّا مَقتًا ۖ وَلا يَزيدُ الكافِرينَ كُفرُهُم إِلّا خَسارًا

Transliteration

huwa lladhī jaʿalakum khalāʾifa fī l-ʾarḍi fa-man kafara fa-ʿalayhi kufruhū wa-lā yazīdu l-kāfirīna kufruhum ʿinda rabbihim ʾillā maqtan wa-lā yazīdu l-kāfirīna kufruhum ʾillā khasāran

Translation

It is He who made you successors on the earth.1 So whoever is faithless, his unfaith is to his own detriment. And the unfaith of the faithless does not increase them with their Lord [in anything] except disfavour, and their unfaith increases the faithless in nothing except loss.
  • That is, of the former peoples.
40
قُل أَرَأَيتُم شُرَكاءَكُمُ الَّذينَ تَدعونَ مِن دونِ اللَّهِ أَروني ماذا خَلَقوا مِنَ الأَرضِ أَم لَهُم شِركٌ فِي السَّماواتِ أَم آتَيناهُم كِتابًا فَهُم عَلىٰ بَيِّنَتٍ مِنهُ ۚ بَل إِن يَعِدُ الظّالِمونَ بَعضُهُم بَعضًا إِلّا غُرورًا

Transliteration

qul ʾa-raʾaytum shurakāʾakumu lladhīna tadʿūna min dūni llāhi ʾarūnī mādhā khalaqū mina l-ʾarḍi ʾam lahum shirkun fī s-samāwāti ʾam ʾātaynāhum kitāban fa-hum ʿalā bayyinatin minhu bal ʾin yaʿidu ẓ-ẓālimūna baʿḍuhum baʿḍan ʾillā ghurūran

Translation

Say, ‘Tell me about your partners [you ascribe to Allah] whom you invoke besides Allah? Show me what [part] of the earth have they created. Do they have any share in the heavens?’ Have We given them a scripture so that they stand on a manifest proof thereof? Rather the wrongdoers do not promise one another [anything] except delusion.
41
۞ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُمسِكُ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضَ أَن تَزولا ۚ وَلَئِن زالَتا إِن أَمسَكَهُما مِن أَحَدٍ مِن بَعدِهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كانَ حَليمًا غَفورًا

Transliteration

ʾinna llāha yumsiku s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa ʾan tazūlā wa-la-ʾin zālatā ʾin ʾamsakahumā min ʾaḥadin min baʿdihī ʾinnahū kāna ḥalīman ghafūran

Translation

Indeed Allah sustains the heavens and the earth lest they should fall apart, and if they were to fall apart there is none who can sustain them except Him. Indeed He is all-forbearing, all-forgiving.
42
وَأَقسَموا بِاللَّهِ جَهدَ أَيمانِهِم لَئِن جاءَهُم نَذيرٌ لَيَكونُنَّ أَهدىٰ مِن إِحدَى الأُمَمِ ۖ فَلَمّا جاءَهُم نَذيرٌ ما زادَهُم إِلّا نُفورًا

Transliteration

wa-ʾaqsamū bi-llāhi jahda ʾaymānihim la-ʾin jāʾahum nadhīrun la-yakūnunna ʾahdā min ʾiḥdā l-ʾumami fa-lammā jāʾahum nadhīrun mā zādahum ʾillā nufūran-i

Translation

And they1 swore by Allah with solemn oaths that if a warner were to come to them they would be better guided than any of the nations. But when a warner came to them it only increased them in aversion,
  • That is, the idolaters of Arabia.
43
استِكبارًا فِي الأَرضِ وَمَكرَ السَّيِّئِ ۚ وَلا يَحيقُ المَكرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلّا بِأَهلِهِ ۚ فَهَل يَنظُرونَ إِلّا سُنَّتَ الأَوَّلينَ ۚ فَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللَّهِ تَبديلًا ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللَّهِ تَحويلًا

Transliteration

istikbāran fī l-ʾarḍi wa-makra s-sayyiʾi wa-lā yaḥīqu l-makru s-sayyiʾu ʾillā bi-ʾahlihī fa-hal yanẓurūna ʾillā sunnata l-ʾawwalīna fa-lan tajida li-sunnati llāhi tabdīlan wa-lan tajida li-sunnati llāhi taḥwīlan

Translation

acting arrogantly in the land and devising evil schemes; and evil schemes beset only their authors. So do they await anything except the precedent of the ancients? Yet you will never find any change in Allah’s precedent, and you will never find any revision in Allah’s precedent.
44
أَوَلَم يَسيروا فِي الأَرضِ فَيَنظُروا كَيفَ كانَ عاقِبَةُ الَّذينَ مِن قَبلِهِم وَكانوا أَشَدَّ مِنهُم قُوَّةً ۚ وَما كانَ اللَّهُ لِيُعجِزَهُ مِن شَيءٍ فِي السَّماواتِ وَلا فِي الأَرضِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كانَ عَليمًا قَديرًا

Transliteration

ʾa-wa-lam yasīrū fī l-ʾarḍi fa-yanẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu lladhīna min qablihim wa-kānū ʾashadda minhum quwwatan wa-mā kāna llāhu li-yuʿjizahū min shayʾin fī s-samāwāti wa-lā fī l-ʾarḍi ʾinnahū kāna ʿalīman qadīran

Translation

Have they not traveled over the land so that they may observe how was the fate of those who were before them? They were more powerful than them, and Allah is not to be thwarted by anything in the heavens or on the earth. Indeed He is all-knowing, all-powerful.

  • وَلَو يُؤاخِذُ اللَّهُ النّاسَ بِما كَسَبوا ما تَرَكَ عَلىٰ ظَهرِها مِن دابَّةٍ وَلٰكِن يُؤَخِّرُهُم إِلىٰ أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۖ فَإِذا جاءَ أَجَلُهُم فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ كانَ بِعِبادِهِ بَصيرًا

    Transliteration

    wa-law yuʾākhidhu llāhu n-nāsa bi-mā kasabū mā taraka ʿalā ẓahrihā min dābbatin wa-lākin yuʾakhkhiruhum ʾilā ʾajalin musamman fa-ʾidhā jāʾa ʾajaluhum fa-ʾinna llāha kāna bi-ʿibādihī baṣīran

    Translation

    Were Allah to take mankind to task because of what they have earned, He would not leave any living being on its back.1 But He respites them until a specified time, and when their time comes, Allah indeed sees best His servants.
