SUST VC appears in public after 26 days
The Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, who was in voluntary confinement in his residence for the last 26 days due to student protests, finally came out this evening to meet Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni and deputy minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury.
Prof Farid went to his office this evening to meet the ministers. Since the students launched their protest demanding his resignation on January 16, he had been performing his duties from his residence, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
Earlier in the day, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni and Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury held a meeting with representatives of the student protesters who have been demonstrating on the campus demanding the resignation of VC Prof Farid Uddin.
A group of SUST students on January 13, began demonstrations demanding the removal of their dormitory's provost Zafrin Ahmed Liza, for misbehaving with a student.
Police on January 16, fired rubber bullets and hurled sound grenades on the agitating students, triggering a clash that left more than 30 students injured. The attack prompted the students to wage demonstration demanding the resignation of VC Prof Farid.
Since then, the VC went in voluntary confinement at his residence.
